Convenient but unreliable

After the 3rd week, it turns out that I have a number of problems, the most important is the lack of brakes. Already after the first chamfering, it turns out that it is better not to accelerate because you will certainly not stop in front of an obstacle. The second major issue is the gears. In total, after 3 weeks, I sometimes manage to smoothly change gears, but it's better not to do it when you are overstretched because it can lead to a tragedy. The gears change as they want, there are no intermediate gears, but either you pedal in place or you are not able to start from there. Now, smaller drawbacks. The seat is a failure, it is impossible to sit. Something squeaks in the front wheel as if the hamster is trapped there. The pedals are so shabby construction that first it was a problem to screw them in because the threads were not adjusted and the screw is so small that I already feel them bend under pressure and plastic are really weak. On the plus side there is a frame which is solid and comfortable, after changing the saddle it is very comfortable to ride and the position is not tiring.

Fantastic value !

I've had this bike for 2 weeks now and it's been wonderful so far! I am 5'4 with a small frame size. It's not overly light but feels sturdy, lovely colour (I have have the light blue) and rides really nice. I use it to commute to work almost everyday and to also go a little off-road through parks. It handles the daily great and switches gears smoothly. Also handles gravel and those unpredictable dirt roads. I don't do anything heavy and I've been high speeds down hills and never felt like it'll fall apart. Overall love this bike and a good re-entry into cycling.

Excellent bike for the money

This is not a desirable bike, but it is a great bike that does the job without breaking the bank. It's a heavy beast but it's well built & comfortable. The front fork can squeak a bit, and I've ridden a couple of these now and it's been the same on both, but it's not an issue. My chain did rust after about 4 months along Blackpool sea front in the summer, and the derailleur did break Decathlon sent me a free replacement, so maybe it's not the best build. However, the replacement derailleur was a free upgrade and it seems to have lasted better this time. One warning though - this heavy bike is really tiring riding into the wind. It will tire you out more than you can imagine. My road bike which is light as a feather sails through the wind, this holds you back and the same journey wears me out on this bike.

Great leisure bike

This is a very comfortable bike for the casual rider. Great on broken tarmac roads and dirt trails. The highest gear is just about right to make steady progress on the flat. 1st ride out on it and did just under 30 miles over mixed surfaces, without any issues. Great bike so far.

Riverside 500 Hybrid Bike

I have owned this bike for more than 6 months now, and totally love it. It is an extremely easy ride, feels very lightweight. The bike is also extremely comfortable, from the saddle, width of handlebars, to the wrist guards on the handlebars. As a novice, I set out on a 20mile bike ride and at the end, still felt I could go further. Totally happy with this bike.

Good hybrid bike

Nice, lightweight bike. Copes well with roads and rough paths (not full off road). Easy peddling and good road position.

Great all purpose bike

Just took it to a cycling break on the Isle of Wight. Ride like a dream, good on the uphill too!

Really pleased

This was one of three Riverside bikes I was looking at to replace my very old and heavy hybrid that had done sterling service during the 2020 lockdowns but needed modernising. The 500 was the highest price in my budget; but I was just waiting for any stock to come in. I’m so pleased that it was the 500 that became available first. It’s really reinvigorated my riding, I’m using it to take the kids to school, go shopping, just get some exercise and explore, all sorts. The gear ratio is maybe a little low for some, but fine for me and I’m very happy with the 1x9 layout. Gets rid of a lot of messing around for me; I don’t need that many gears. Brakes are great, they make me stop. I’ve not had disc brakes before so couldn’t compare, but they are good for me. I ordered mudguards and a stand with the bike and the team fitted them for me, which put a huge grin on my face when it was wheeled out of the store. (I certainly didn’t spend 10 minutes riding it round the car park like a big kid ;-) I’ve added a rear rack and two pannier bags so I can do a good bit of shopping or carry “stuff” for an adventure day with the family. And I might have been idly browsing cycle routes in Northern France too... Downsides? Gears need reindexing after three/four months. Probably just the cable stretching and I’m actually on the website to touch base with my local store to take it in for the free three month check anyway.

Great ride on & off road

Delighted with this bike. I couldn’t consider the more expensive Riverside 900 nor even try this due to supply constraints so took a risk and ordered to replace my 8-year old Riverside 3. Modern “urban hybrids” now have a very upright riding style which I prefer - almost as upright as a Dutch style bike. And it seems more agile and easier to manipulate than my old bike though I don’t think the wheels are any closer. The saddle & general position are very comfortable - on day 2, I took it out for 2 hours. I’ve adjusted the suspension to be quite generous, not stiff, for Manchester’s roads and the cycle paths around the river Mersey. I didn’t know whether I could be frustrated occasionally by the gear range but I haven’t been. Fitness may mean different people want different ranges, but for me gears 8 or 9 have allowed me to go as fast as possible on flat and gears 2 or 3 handle most hills - but I don’t consider my area to be very hilly so people living in other areas might want to try this before buying if they have steep hills to climb. For me, 9 gears seems better than 3x8 - it’s simpler so faster, less faff, and should be less maintenance or potential for issues. That said I’m not sure the indexing is perfect as I’ve had to double-click the shifter sometimes so may ask it to be reviewed. I’ve added mud-guards and a rack. Decathlon’s racks were all heavy but I found a light one elsewhere. Note that racks must cater for disc brakes. I did first think the handle grips were a bit short for someone with large hands, and the Riverside 900 has great looking extensions - so that’s a future easy and fairly inexpensive ‘upgrade’ that I’ll consider. Highly recommended and delighted that Decathlon have managed to continue some supply during peak demand, even if other models and some colours of this one weren’t available.
