Why choose a gravel bike rather than a road bike with fat tyres?

A gravel bike is not just a road bike with fat tyres. Even if it shares DNA with a road bike, gravel bikes have their own unique characteristics. On our GRVL 120 gravel bike, we have changed the frame of our RC120 disc by adjusting clearance (tyre space) for riding with a 700x38 tyre. It also has mechanical disc brakes. On this gravel bike, we also used our tubeless gravel wheels in 23c, and a single chainring drive train.

Gravel Bike GRVL 120

Good for the price

I've had my GRVL 120 for a year now and have used it for local gravel rides and taken it bike packing on the Trans Pennine Trail. On the TPT, the bike held up well bouncing around on the rough parts of the trails. In places you need some lower gears, a 12 speed cassette or an extra chain ring would come in handy. On descents you could do with higher gears. The main drawbacks are the tyres, they are useless. You need to carry two spare tubes and a puncture repair kit wherever you go. Or as I did after six months of pain. Buy a better set of tyres and go tubeless. I would recommend the bike, but would not recommend the tyres.

decent bike & good looking but has issues

6 month review - as others have noted, the brakes are poor. the disc brakes are difficult to adjust to any real level of responsiveness and the gearing does not engage beyond a fairly low upper limit, meaning on downhills you quickly unable to gain traction. the main frustration for me however has been that despite being described as mudgard compatible, my local shop pointed out there is little clearance. This meant no option of a permanently fitted mudgard. I feel this to be very peculiar for a bike clearly designed for off gravel and essentially that this product is misadvertised. Decathalon have pointed me towards SKS speedrocker guards which are a great product, however they dont fit well esp on the front because theres no space on the forks for fixing due to a brake cabling bracket being part of the frame there.

Great for amateur gravel rides and commuting

Bought this bike mainly for commuting - as I wanted something less bulky than a mountain/ hybrid bike, but a bit sturdier than a road bike. This ticks the boxes really well, and I feel safer with the chunkier tires, especially cycling on roads in wintry conditions. Only snag is that the front brake tends to loosen up a bit despite me tightening it, and the saddle is pretty rock hard - however that's obviously something I can change.
